Beyond basic two-part systems, epoxies are classified by their molecular backbone, which dictates their performance in extreme environments:
- Bisphenol-A (DGEBA): The most widely commercialised resin, accounting for over 75% of global usage. It provides high temperature performance and toughness, making it the standard for structural adhesives and coatings.
- Novolac Epoxies: Produced from phenol and formaldehyde, these have a higher cross-link density. They are the preferred choice for high-temperature environments (up to 250°C) and offer the best resistance to aggressive acids and solvents.
- Aliphatic & Cycloaliphatic: These lack the aromatic rings of standard epoxies, providing superior UV weathering resistance and color stability. They are commonly used in outdoor applications, LED encapsulation, and marine finishes.
- Glycidylamine Epoxies: High-functionality resins with low to medium viscosity at room temperature. Their high reactivity and mechanical strength make them critical for aerospace composites and carbon fiber applications
